KUCHING: The value of the halal market is expected to grow to $6.9 trillion in 2023, an increase of 50 per cent from $4.3 trillion in 2017.

According to the deputy director of the Halal, F&B and Agro-based Section of Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), it will increase because of the rapid growth of the halal industry.

“At present, most halal products exporters are in non-Muslim countries. It is not about religion anymore. It is about the ability of companies to meet the set of halal certification standards,” he told reporters at “Export Opportunities in Halal Industry Seminar” here yesterday.

On the export potential of halal products and services from Sarawak, he said many products including foods and handicrafts can be highlighted as Sarawak is well-known for its unique nature.

“Sadly, most Sarawakian companies still lack awareness of export opportunities.

“That is why we have to engage with them more and tell them not to be afraid as Matrade will assist them. We will provide grants, market intelligence as well as advice.

“Of course, it is not easy to penetrate the export market but with the right direction and marketing strategies, we can definitely get into neighbouring countries such as Indonesia,” explained Khairul.

On laksa Sarawak paste, he said there is a big potential for the product to penetrate the China market.

“I was very impressed with the laksa paste packaging, and as far as I know, the Chinese are very adventurous. In terms of food, they are willing to try new ones. If they suit their taste, they will buy the food,” he said, adding that there are a few Sarawakian companies taking part in the China Asean Expo (Caexpo) every year.

Also present at the seminar was Matrade Sarawak director, Leany Mokhtar.
