ULU PADAWAN: The implementation of collecting, processing and packaging centre (CPPC) in Tarat will be another stepping stone to introduce durian kampung (local durian) to China.

Deputy State Secretary (Rural Transformation) Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik said there are two or three groups who are interested in introducing Sarawak’s durian kampung to China.

“Durian owners can send their fruits to the Tarat CPPC if the local market is saturated, albeit at a lower price.

“At the centre, we will produce durian paste which are packaged and sent to China where the produce can be marketed there,” he said after visiting a durian orchard at Kampung Assum some 75 kilometres from Kuching city, yesterday.

Ik Pahon said that durian kampung has a sweet taste and of high quality.

“We want to introduce durian kampung to the Chinese who are only exposed to the Musang King variety,” he said.

Ik Pahon was optimistic that durian will be a source of wealth for people who have large orchards.
