KUCHING: Incumbent Bidayuh assemblymen from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will have to work extra hard to deliver promises in facing the next state election.

This is because Pakatan Harapan (PH) has successfully made inroads into Bidayuh-majority seats in the last general election, said Associate Professor Dr Ahi Sarok of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

He noted that in that election, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Willie Mongin and Democratic Action Party (DAP) Mordi Bimol had a breakthrough in Puncak Borneo (comprising Serembu, Mambong and Tarat seats) and Mas Gading (comprising Tasik Biru, Opar, Tanjong Datu state seats), respectively after several attempts.

Ahi said GPS also needs to explain the policies of the state government to every nook and corner of the constituencies.

“What is important is that the state government must also issue individual land titles under Section 18 of the Sarawak Land Code,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

He was asked to comment on a statement by Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin on Monday that GPS could deliver all eight Bidayuh state seats in the next state polls.

Ahi suggested that the GPS-led state government should also provide more farm roads, so that farmers could have easy access to their farm land, concentrate on holistic human capital development and provide adequate job opportunities to the people.

All these would certainly enhance incumbent Bidayuh (GPS) assemblymen’s advantage over their opponents, he added.
