KUCHING: The National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA), which is scheduled to be held in Sarawak on May 27, will be filled with several exciting events including workshops.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communications Unit) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said the proposed event would not be a one-day thing.

“Probably there will be several events towards May 27. Maybe we will organise a workshop involving young people in understanding the media career.

“We will also invite existing media personnel, not only those in electronic and newspaper, but also those from the online media,” he told reporters when met after the Majlis Amanat Perdana for State Civil Service at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday (Jan 12).

He added students might also be invited to join the event so that it could expose them to what the media industry was about.

On a related note, Abdullah said that several meetings had been held between key secretariats on the organisation of the event.

“I believe that next week, we will have a meeting in Kuala Lumpur to meet with the Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil and those involved to discuss the planning of the event,” he said.

Abdullah, while expressing his gratitude to Fahmi for agreeing that Sarawak be the host of HAWANA, said that it was one of the major events that were going to take place apart from Malaysia Games (SUKMA).

“We will also ensure that media friends outside Sarawak are given the opportunity to experience firsthand what is happening in Sarawak in terms of development, initiatives and so on.

“At the same time, there will certainly be exhibitions about the history of the journey of Sarawak media members in collectively developing and shaping the state of Sarawak,” he said.
