Hazard: Homestay fined RM10k

MIRI:  The proprietor of a homestay at North Yu Seng road here last Wednesday, was fined RM10,000 in default of five months imprisonment for failing to comply with fire hazard abatement as required under Fire Services Act 1988.

A Magistrate’s Court here meted out the sentence after the 56-year-old female accused, who appeared before

Magistrate Leona Dominic Mojiliu and Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie, pleaded guilty to all five charges framed under Section 10 of Fire Services Act 1988 read together with Section 341 of the same Act.

Prosecuting officer from State Fire and Rescue Department (headquarters) PKPgB Thomas Umpang pointed out the homestay had failed to comply with fire hazard abatement requirement when officers from the department inspected her premises on March 23, 2017; and July 6 that same year.

A warning notice was issued on March 24, 2017 following their first visit to the premises (on March 23).

Despite repeated warnings and reminders, the homestay still failed to comply with the requirements when officers from the department inspected the premise on July 6, 2017.
