KUCHING: The wind was in Sarawak’s favour as it did not carry the haze from across the border of Kalimantan to here.

The air pollutant index (API) reading for Kuching is moderate but it has been at a good level for other areas in the state.

“This is due to the rain that occurred throughout the state which also helped to suppress the haze.

“Due to the rain, the fire weather index (FWI) also shows that there is a low fire hazard,” said Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak Controller of Environmental Quality Justine Jok Jau Emang in a statement on Thursday.

On Monday, 161 hotspots were detected in the northern parts of Kalimantan.

“We are going into the last month of the southwest monsoon (dry season) before going into inter-monsoon in October.

“The prediction by the Meteorological Department is that more rain will occur in Miri and Bintulu; it will then continue to other parts of Sarawak,” he added.
