Heads of religious institutions support vaccination programme

KUCHING: Various heads of religious institutions in Sarawak have given their unanimous support to the government’s Covid-19 immunisation programme, and has urged all to support it as well.

Recently, the Sarawak government through its inclusive approach, called for a meeting with heads of religious institutions to discuss and update them on the programme.

During the meeting, Sarawak Islamic Council said it was one’s responsibility to safeguard oneself by taking the vaccine as a prevention from contracting the virus.

This was also the stance of the major religious institutions in Sarawak namely Association of Churches Sarawak, Sarawak Evangelical Christian Association, Malaysia Buddhist Association Sarawak Branch, Malaysia Hindu Sangam Sarawak State Council, Sarawak Sikh Temple Association, the Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Sarawak and the Kuching Hokkien Association representing the Taoist Faith.

“We need to stand as one, no matter what race or creed we represent, in response to this pandemic as it does not discriminate race or religion. Therefore, get yourself registered and be vaccinated.

“Let us all support the Sarawak government’s immunisation programme which is one of inclusivity; leaving no one behind. Together we will overcome this pandemic.”

They added that while they respected and acknowledged that ultimately it was the individual who would decide to take the vaccine or not.

The Sarawak government acknowledged the vital role of the religious institutions, especially in the promotion of the programme aimed ultimately at creating herd immunity among the population.

The unanimous support from the heads of religious institutions for the programme in the recent meeting was a significant boost.
