KUCHING: Any individual found violating the movement control order (MCO) will soon be slapped with a fine of up to RM10,000.

Any company guilty of the same offence is liable to a maximum fine of up to RM50,000, a check on the e-Federal Gazette published today revealed.

The drastic increase in fine is stipulated in the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 published in the Federal Gazette.

According to the gazette, the ordinance will come into force on March 11.

Under the new ordinance, there are also amendments to the wearing of a tracking device under Section 15a and general penalty under Section 24.

Under the new Section 24 of the ordinance, any person who breaches the law for “which no penalty is expressly provided” could face a maximum fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to seven years upon conviction.

As for the new Section 15 of the ordinance, any authorised officer might order any person who is infected or whom he has reason to believe to be infected to wear any tracing device provided to him.
