KUCHING: The monsoon transition phase is expected to start on Mar 16 and continue until the middle of May, said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

“The start of this phase indicates the end of the North East Monsoon which started on Nov 11 last year,” it said in a statement today (Mar 12).

It said during the monsoon transition phase, the region will experience winds from various directions that are suitable for thunderstorms which will bring heavy rains and strong winds in a short period of time.

“This happens especially in the afternoon and evening in most areas in states on the west coast and the rural peninsular area, western Sabah, and western and central Sarawak.

“Such weather conditions have the potential to cause flash floods and damages to structures which are not sturdy,” it said.

The public is advised to be careful during this period and to always be alert towards warnings issued by the department through its official website and social media as well as the myCuaca application.
