Heavy rain, thunderstorms expected in Kuching until 2pm today

KUCHING: Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted to occur in several areas in Sarawak from now until 2pm today (Mar 18).

In a statement issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) at 9am today, it pointed out that the affected areas will be Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, and Miri.

A thunderstorm warning is issued when there are signs of a thunderstorm with rain intensity exceeding 20 mm/hour that is close to or expected to last for more than an hour.

Meanwhile, several locations in the city have been affected by flash floods due to the heavy rain.

At the time of writing, the New Sarawak Tribune learned that the areas in Kuching affected included Kampung Sinar Budi in Batu Kawah, Desa Wira, Mile 3 Underpass, Rock Road, Mile 6, Mile 7, Jalan Song, Tabuan Dayak, Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, Batu Lintang, Padang Merdeka, and Jalan Padungan.

In the meantime, the public is urged to monitor the weather conditions through the department’s official website at https://www.met.gov.my/en/, the myCuaca mobile application, or the department’s official social media pages.
