KUCHING: Drivers, especially those who drive large vehicles are reminded to be mindful and aware of any warning road signs.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai (pic) said this in response to a recent incident which involved a chartered bus that badly damaged its roof when it got stuck at the Datuk Temenggong Abang Kipali Abang Akip Interchange

underpass.

With several warning signs set up, he said it was impossible for Kuching drivers to not notice such signs.

“Most of the drivers of these big vehicles that have been caught at the underpass were not from Kuching.

“However, drivers should have been aware since there are several signs erected, clearly stating that the underpass could only be accessed by vehicles under 2.2m in height,” he told reporters when visiting the preparation works for the 13th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference (Apoc) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here,

yesterday.

When asked what actions have DBKU taken, Abdul Wahap said he had contacted the relevant authorities for repair work.

“We will penalise those drivers who did the damage. Furthermore, the bypass is still under the Public Works Department (JKR) and has not been handed over to DBKU,” he said.

He added that JKR is still inspecting the bypass to ensure that the structure is safe.

“Physically, there are no damages seen at the underpass,” he said.
