SEMATAN: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has advised residents not to be alarmed if they hear a warning siren tomorrow (May 7).

The siren will be part of a scheduled test of the Tsunami Early Warning System (SAATNM) at the Sematan Fishing Centre, which is set to occur between 9 am and 11 am.

“Residents in the surrounding areas are advised not to panic when they hear the siren, as this is only a test,” MetMalaysia said in a statement.

The department assured that it would inform the public should there be any changes to the planned test.

Managed by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, the SAATNM is designed to provide timely warnings to residents in the event of a potential tsunami. The system detects regional earthquakes and assesses whether they could trigger a tsunami that might impact Malaysia.
