MUKAH: To address the recent issue of vehicle overloading at the Kuala Igan ferry, especially heavy vehicles, the Mukah Public Works Department (JKR) will install a height restriction barrier.

Mukah JKR on Sunday said this in a statement, responding to Jemoreng assemblyman Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, who was quoted on Aug 10 saying that large corporations and conglomerates are advised to operate their own ferry services to avoid congesting public ferries here.

“The tender is expected to be released by end of this month,” Mukah JKR added.

“Heavy vehicles such as tanker trucks, cargo trucks, palm oil trucks, transporters have caused traffic congestion to the public ferry service provided by the government.”

Heavy vehicles wait in line as early as 6am and around 3.30pm to use the Kuala Igan ferry service, it added.

On another development, Mukah JKR said under the Coastal Road and Second Trunk Road projects that is fully paid by the Sarawak government, a bridge across Batang Igan would be build.

“At the moment, it is still awaiting approval from Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri on how the bridge is going to be implemented.”
