KUCHING: As the rainy season looms ahead, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has issued a cautionary advisory on a noticeable surge in crocodile population and their increased activities across the state.

The surge is particularly evident from November and is expected to persist until March, aligning with the species’ breeding season.

“The public is strongly urged to remain vigilant during this period, especially in areas near water bodies. The breeding season prompts heightened crocodile activity, potentially bringing them closer to residential zones,” SFC said in a statement today.

To mitigate potential risks, the SFC advised securing livestock away from water sources and promptly reporting any crocodile sightings. Responsible waste disposal is emphasized to avoid attracting crocodiles, as improperly discarded trash in rivers can draw them closer to residential areas.

The release further mentioned that continuous rainfall leads to elevated water levels, allowing crocodiles greater freedom of movement on land. During the breeding season, animals and livestock near water sources become especially appealing to crocodiles.

Stressing the importance of community efforts, the SFC highlighted the need for collaborative action to ensure a safer environment for all.

“Should there be any concerns or encounters related to crocodile issues, the public is encouraged to contact the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) hotline at 1-800-88-2526 for immediate assistance,” the corporation said.
