KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has called on the public to work together to achieve zero rabies status.

He hoped the public will cooperate with local government in ensuring the rabies ‘disaster’ does not spiral out of control.

“I call it a disaster because the situation is quite serious with both cats and dogs susceptible to getting rabies.”

He gave the advice during a mass anti-rabies vaccination event organised by MBKS at the Kuching Community Hall on today (April 28).

Wee reminded that while everyone has the right to keep a pet, they must be responsible pet owners.

“We are open to any constructive criticism. If it is good, we will adopt it because our sole mission is to cut down rabies cases to zero, so please do not argue among one another about who is doing the right thing,” he stated.

On the programme, he said pet owners can get free services like rabies vaccination, pet owner licence registration, microchipping their pets and even get a subsidy up to RM150 for the first one hundred pet owners.

“Today is the third vaccination round. The first two were done around the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) areas respectively.

“Today around the MBKS area, we are targeting at least 1,000 vaccinations, be it a new vaccination or a yearly vaccination for the pets.”

Stating that this is one way of trying to reduce rabies cases, Wee appealed to the public to take care of their pets because the responsibility is theirs.
