SIMANGGANG: The completion of the Pan Borneo Highway will be helpful to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s plan of transforming Lachau into an ‘organic town’.

In his statement, Abang Johari explained that agricultural produce from Lachau could easily be transported to Kuching as the highway would reduce travelling time between the two areas.

“Lachau has a great potential to become an ‘organic town’ that would develop its agriculture on its own.

“I have informed the State Economic Planning Unit to plan the building of a fruit processing centre at the town.

“I can see a bright future ahead for Lachau in the field of agricultural production. The volume is great and we can process the food crops otherwise they go to waste,” he said.

Abang Johari said this in a media interview after officiating at Sri Aman Waterfront earth-breaking ceremony at Pesta Benak here, yesterday.

Specifically, he said Lachau as lots of rambutans that could be processed or canned.

“Not only rambutans, but durians could be processed into many products.

“Vegetables such as ‘terung Dayak’ have high demand from Singapore. These vegetables have great potential,” he said.
