KUCHING: The sooner the Pan Borneo Highway project is completed, the earlier will the socio-economic status and livelihood of the people as well as the mobility and connectivity in the state improve.

That is our immediate and utmost expectation from the highway,” said Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan, when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune recently.

“The highway will speed up journeys from Limbang in the north to Lundu in the south and cut short travelling time tremendously across this huge Sarawak landscape.”

He added the completion of the highway project would bring huge economic benefits to rural communities across the state.

Snowdan, who is also Balai Ringin assemblyman, said the highway would ensure a more comfortable ride with stopovers at various main towns within the 12 divisions in Sarawak.

“Better roads with extra safety guides and precautions along the way will make people travel and see what other places have to offer in eco-tourism.

“The completion of this highway will also ease logistics issues in constructing the Second Trunk Road and the Coastal Road Network.

“With the commencement of these two roads, rural dwellers will be able to capitalise on the employment opportunities available,” he added.

Apart from that, the Youth and Sports Assistant Minister added that the roads would open up vast land areas for agriculture, light industrial start-ups and other diverse economic activities such as cottage industries, constructions and eco-tourism.

Last Saturday, Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the highway project was 69.90 percent completed and that it was scheduled to be ready in September 2022.

He added that the movement control order (MCO) and various constraints had delayed the completion of the project.
