KUCHING: A fresh general election will be the most responsible approach to take to tackle the current political impasse at the federal level, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Stakan branch.

Echoing the call by SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting yesterday, Stakan SUPP chief Sim Kiang Chiok said this had been unanimously agreed on by the branch’s executive committee and members.

The current political impasse had led to the resignation of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad and the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government after just 655 days in power.

Dr Mahathir, however, has been appointed as interim prime minister until a new prime minster is appointed and a new federal Cabinet is formed.

Ting said, “The proper solution to the political crisis faced by our beloved Malaysia should be solved via the ballot box.”

Sim concurred, saying that by dissolving parliament and calling for a fresh election, the people could make their voice heard hence amicably resolve whatever dispute.

“Some have argued that the general election is costly and it would give undue stress on the national coffers and taxpayers money. However should matters turn from bad to worse in terms of the overall economy, the country could still go bankrupt by not having the election and Malaysia could ill afford either one of these scenarios,” he added.

Sim said a fresh election would take away the pressure on the constitutional monarch and allowed the country to move on.

Spending during the elections would somewhat become a proverbial shot in the arm for the domestic economy, easing pressure and generating confidence from would-be investors, he said.

“So the extra cost that these badly needed polls would incur will be well justified, particularly if it helps us avoid unnecessary racial tensions and economical disasters while simultaneously steering the country to a recovery and greater stability,” Sim added.
