KUALA LUMPUR: Homemade Ice Cream Malaysia, in cylindrical form, of various colours and flavours, remains the choice dessert for Malaysians.

It started with only a few flavours such as asam boi and corn, now there are various flavours such as Vanilla Chocolate, Onde Onde Gula Melaka and Lychee Sakura to meet the taste buds of Ice Cream Malaysia lovers..

For Ice Cream Malaysia entrepreneur Nur Mala Amin, 36, the Magnum Peanut, Bluemint and Durian are among the special flavours out of the 19 flavours she made that are highly sought after by her customers, who are from various walks of life.

“These three special flavours are sold at a price of RM2.50 per stick due to the quality of the ingredients used and the more complicated process to make them, but there are also nine other flavours such as Choki-choki, sumi, green tea, lychee, strawberry and grape which are sold at RM1.50 and RM1.00 per stick.

“Many customers buy the ice cream to reminisce about their childhood days. Even though there are many other types of ice cream in the market, ice cream Malaysia remains special,” she told Bernama.

Mala, who started the business in 2017 and still operates from home, continues to use traditional methods to produce over 100,000 ice cream sticks per month. She is assisted by two workers.

“The equipment used is still the same as how I started before, such as jugs and funnels to put the mixture into plastic bags and the most complicated process is tying the plastic to make sure they are all of the same size,” she added.

Through the brand name Akak Aiskrim Malaysia, Mala, who has three children, is now able to open a shop and a kiosk in Danau Kota, Setapak here to sell her ice cream.

The business is able to provide her with a five-figure income.

Another entrepreneur Nurul Wahida Rosli, 36, also a housewife with two children, makes Ice Cream Malaysia to supplement her husband’s income.

According to Nurul Wahida, even though there are various types of ice cream in the market, Ice Cream Malaysia is still popular because it is cheap, fresh and easy to eat.

“I receive orders of over 1,000 sticks a month and among the flavours that children like the most are Choki Choki, Rainbow, Oreo and Milo.

“Adults prefer to choose sweet and sour flavors such as Asam Boi Lemon and pineapple,” she said.

Nurul Wahida who runs the business with her mother also shared the difference in demand for ice cream in the past and now.

“In the past, the children would come to our house to buy. Now, the parents are the ones to come and buy and they bought in large quantities,” she said, adding that many bookings were made for birthday parties.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Nazrin Rosman, 22, said that even though there are many choices of ice cream, he still prefers Ice Cream Malaysia and it remains his favourite.
