SIBU: The establishment of the Homeless Transit Point (TTG) will be expanded to Kuching, Miri and Bintulu.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said TTG provided a place to board and integrated services for health screening.

“TTG also serves as a reference to the relevant agencies,” she said while inspecting the improvement work on the Sibu Division Maksak house to house TTG in Sibu on Monday (April 5).

She added that the operations of Sibu TTG would be handled by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) appointed by the Sarawak Homeless Coordinating Committee.

“The Sibu Branch Shan Xin Malaysia Charity Association will act as the main operating body of Sibu TTG and will work with other associations.

“We welcome the involvement of NGOs.”

Meanwhile, Fatimah also mentioned that the Borneo Best Community Social Support Centre in Kuching would provide assistance and support to the homeless around the city.

“The community social support centre also provides assistance, support and intervention referral services to address social problems.”

Maksak House Sibu, which is a TTG, will be completed in August.

Fatimah said the TTG at Rumah Maksak Sibu was expected to be completed on Aug 14 in which it would help 40 homeless people at a time (20 male and 20 female).

“As of March this year, 22 homeless people in Sibu Division have been successfully registered as recipients of the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme.

“In 2020, 83 homeless rescue operations were held where 237 people were rescued.”

She added that as of February 2021, 64 homeless people were rescued through 30 operations held in eight parts of the state.

Also present were acting Sibu Division Resident Wong Hee Sieng and Sarawak Women and Family Department director Noriah Ahmad.
