SIBU: The promise to return 20 per cent oil and gas loyalty and 50 per cent tax collected from Sarawak must be honoured.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew said if there isn’t enough money to pay Sarawak now, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government should put it on paper that it owes Sarawak the money and to be paid with interest upon demand.

Alternatively, he said Sarawak could ask for payment in kind such as taking over some federal owned assets.

“If the federal government still refuses then all option is open for Sarawak to decide its relationship with the federal government including a review on its status in the federation of Malaysia.

“What was promised by the PH government was actually one of the main points of the Malaysia Agreement 1963…sharing the revenue obtained from Sarawak with Sarawak.

“That point was incorporated into the Malaysian Constitution Article 112(c) and (d) whereby the federal government will refund to Sarawak a capitation grant. The amount was supposed to be reviewed every five years.

“It should work out to roughly 40-50 per cent of tax collected from Sarawak. That was the figure applicable to Singapore and Sabah,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

According to Lau, Sarawak has to look after its own future as the statement from PH leaders made it abundantly clear that Sarawak’s role in Malaysia was that of a cash cow to support Malaysia while the rights and interest of Sarawak are ignored or at best being considered as one 13 states with same share as Perlis for development grant.
