KUCHING: A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Hope Place, recently encountered an intriguing situation during their visit to a man residing in a bamboo house near a stream in Kpg Annah Rais, Padawan.

The man is Saa Yus, a 68-year-old who leads a self-sufficient life without any income or financial resources.

“Without a bank account or connection to the modern world, Saa solely relies on his MyKad for identification,” said the NGO in a press release.

The NGO was impressed by the sturdiness and stability of his house, considering his skill in woodworking.

“Surprisingly, he even constructed a bamboo pipe to collect rainwater, which flows into a large container. His house is equipped with basic amenities such as a designated area for cooking over a campfire, a clothes rail, and a wooden bench for sitting. All of these were crafted from bamboo and wood gathered from the surrounding woods,” added the NGO.

During their initial visit, Hope Place provided Saa with essential food supplies. However, they returned for a second visit, this time installing solar lights, providing a new mattress, and bringing along preloved clothes.

Saa mentioned that he occasionally receives visits from his adult child, although his siblings live far away and seldom keep in touch.

“Although Saa’s family is distant, we are glad to see that he is cared for by the compassionate villagers,” said Hope Place.
