KUCHING: An Indonesian woman who was handed a stiff punishment for having three heads of the hornbill, a protected species, will now have a shorter stay in prison.

Rosmili Sarmila will serve six months behind bars and also pay a lower fine of RM3,000 following her appeal to the High Court.

The 29-year-old was originally sentenced to four years, six months jail and RM30,000 fine by the Sessions Court in Sri Aman.

On Monday Judicial Commissioner Alexander Siew How Wai lessened her punishment for the offence after finding an anomaly in the legal provision used against her.

On Jan 19, she had pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 37(2)(a) Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 punishable under Section 29(1)(a) of the same ordinance.

She was charged with having three hornbill heads at a parking space in Dataran Keling, Lubok Antu at around 2.30pm on Jan 14.
