SIBU: Dance, apart from language, depicts racial identity as the Malays, Ibans, Chinese, Indians and many others have their own dances in their culture.

Stating this, Sibu MP Oscar Ling pointed out that the art of dancing started a long time ago—2,000 or a few thousands years—since the beginning of civilisation.

“I think for the Chinese, it started a few thousand years ago, same goes for the Indians,” he said when officiating at the ‘Fan Dance Night’ hosted by Hornland Dance Theatre (HDT) here on Thursday (Dec 29).

The event was to promote cultural and artistic activities.

He commended HBT for organisng the international dance festival to attract foreign dancers to come to Sibu to showcase their different culture and dances.

“I also thank HDT for keeping the dance culture alive in Sarawak and in Sibu, and that HDT will continue the good work.”

HDT chairperson Wong Siaw Siong expressed her gratitude to the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and other sponsors for supporting the event.

“They have not only given us so much encouragement but also hope and light to brighten the future of the art of dancing,” she said.

Among those present were HDT advisor Datin Judy Lau Kung Ee, HDT artistic director Chen Ing Kuan, councillors Andrew Lau, Zaiton Abdul Kader, Nazatusyima Bujang and Raymond Tiong Yiong Ching.
