PARIS: A huge gas explosion occurred in central Paris on Wednesday, leaving at least 24 people injured, reported Xinhua quoting Paris police.

The explosion occurred at around 5 pm local time at a building in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, Florence Berthout, mayor of the arrondissement, said.

According to Paris police, the explosion caused a large fire to break out. Among those injured, four are in critical condition.

A search and rescue operation is still ongoing at the site of the explosion, police said.

Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that her office is opening an “involuntary injury” investigation into the explosion.
