Huge spike as Sarawak records over 1,500 cases on Monday

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded an all-time high of 1,566 new Covid-19 cases on Monday (Aug 16), a staggering increase compared to the 963 cases recorded the previous day.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the cumulative total number of cases now stood at 88,572 and the state recorded one new fatality.

Kuching District accounted for the highest number of new cases at 731, followed by Bau (238); Lundu (175); Serian (84); Samarahan (44); Betong (40); Sibu (37); Miri (34); 29 cases each in Bintulu and Subis; Song (27); Mukah (19); Sri Aman (17); Asajaya (12); Selangau (nine); Tebedu (eight) and Pusa (seven).

There were six new cases each in Lubok Antu, Dalat and Tatau followed by Saratok (five), Beluru (two) and Lawas (one).

SDMC said that 904 cases were individuals who had close contact with Covid-19 positive cases, 312 were from active clusters and 143 were from screenings of symptomatic individuals at health facilities.

There were 203 from other screenings at health facilities, two Import B cases of individuals returning from other states, namely Sabah, and two Import A cases of individuals returning overseas, namely Myanmar.

“Based on the clinical categories, 1,314 cases or 83.91 per cent are in Category 1 (no symptoms) while 250 cases or 15.96 per cent are in Category 2 (mild symptoms). There are two cases or 0.13 per cent in Category 5 (lung infections and require ventilator).”

On the 487th fatality due to Covid-19, SDMC said it was a 73-year-old local man from Serian District with stroke.

He was confirmed positive on Aug 5 and he passed away at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

At the same time, SDMC said that 513 patients had been discharged from hospitals and low-risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRCs) statewide.

Of these, 278 cases were from SGH and its PKRC; Universiti Malaysia Sarawak PKRC (61); Serian PKRC (54); Bintulu Hospital and its PKRC (37); Sibu Hospital and its PKRC (26); Betong PKRC (24); Miri Hospital and its PKRC (16); Kapit Hospital and its PKRC (six); Mukah PKRC (four); Sarikei Hospital and its PKRC (four); Lawas PKRC (two); Sri Aman Hospital and its PKRC (one).

The number of recovered and discharged cases now stands at 78,557 or 88.69 per cent of the total number of cases statewide.
