SIBU: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has recommended Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew to represent Sarawak as a senator in Dewan Negara.

The appointment of Lau, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman, was announced by the Chief Minister at a dinner with the Chinese community here on Wednesday night.

Johari, who is also State BN chairman, said Lau’s appointment reflected the ruling coalition’s vision for greater voice representing the Sibu people, and Sarawak as a whole in the Federal Government.

He also hoped that the two BN candidates – BN candidate for P.211 Lanang, Kelvin Kong Sien Chiu and BN candidate for P.212 Sibu, Dato Andrew Wong Kee Yew, will win the election.

“We want to have more representatives from Sarawak, including from Sibu, in Parliament. That is why we have appointed Robert Lau as a Senator, and Dato Andrew Wong and Kelvin Kong Sien Chiu as BN candidates.

“This is the way we work together for a stronger Sarawak, in which we would have two MPs and one senator from Sibu,” he explained.

Johari also called on BN election machineries to work together and unite in ensuring the BN candidates could wrest the Sibu and Lanang parliamentary seats from the opposition.

When met by reporters, Lau said he was thankful to the Chief Minister and the Sarawak BN top leadership for their trust in him.

“I was informed about my appointment just a few hours before dinner.

“I am very elated as this appointment will provide me more room to highlight the aspirations of the people in Sibu,” he said.

The Chief Minister’s wife, Datin Patinggi Dato Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research, Dr Annuar Rapaee were among those present.
