KUCHING: Public hydrogen-powered buses will hit the road after they have permits from the Road Transport Department (RTD).

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the RTD has already approved hydrogen-powered cars but not buses.

“The road transport law is outdated because it does not include regulations for hydrogen buses. In this case they need to update their law,” he told reporters.

On the bus permits, he said the department already conducted meetings on the matter, and the state should be getting the permits by next week.

“I think Sarawak is too advanced … so, we wait for them to issue the permits,” he stressed.

Currently, there are three hydrogen buses in Kuching.

This followed the successful collaboration between Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and Foshan Feichi Automobile Manufacture Co Ltd, China to further support the state’s Green Energy Agenda.

It is said that a full tank of hydrogen can travel up to 666km.
