KUCHING: Pioneer plants for the production of hydrogen and hydrogen filling stations developed by Sarawak Energy are expected to be launched in the near future, said Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Group Chief Executive Officer DatuK Sharbini Suhaili.

He said this as the organisation is leading the Sarawak Green Energy Agenda in line with the Chief Minister’s vision to develop green economy in the hydropower chain.

SEB is one of the organisations entrusted to explore the potential of hydrogen cell applications as an alternative source of energy in Sarawak.

“We are also looking for new opportunities to redistribute transportation systems in Sarawak, especially in terms of friendly communications.

“In tandem with the development of digital economy in Sarawak, we strive to develop ICT applications to improve service efficiency whereby the pilot project of 1,600 smart metres in Kampung Gita is underway and this will be extended to other parts of Kuching this year,” he said at the breaking of fast with Rumah Sri Kenangan and Rumah Amal Nur Murni at a hotel here yesterday.

The advantages of the smart metre are accurate readings can be made without the need for location and this will remove the metre reading process. Users can then monitor their respective energy use via SEB Cares mobile application and obtain updated information on the status of supply recovery.

Sharbini further informed that in each project, they strive to maximise positive impact and reduce the negative impact of operations.

“Priority is given to community development through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives which include education and youth; culture and heritage; management and conservation of the environment as well as community development and entrepreneurship,” he said.

Among the activities carried out are bi-education and education funds for Sarawakian children studying at universities and centres, collaborations with local communities to promote culture and heritage, joint health check-ups for seniors in the interior, environmental campaigns at corporate and community level, and safety campaigns at work and electrical safety for staff and community.

Sharbini further shared some of SEB’s key initiatives this year whereby the overall domestic electricity coverage in Sarawak is 95 percent.

“Those outside the city, 91 per cent of households already have 24-hour supply of electrical connections.

“To realise Sarawak’s aspiration to have comprehensive domestic electricity coverage by 2025, Sarawak Energy is implementing the Accelerated Rural Electrification Masterplan guided by the Sarawak Ministry of Utilities.

“We are committed to ensuring that 97 per cent of rural households will be connected to a 24-hour electricity supply by 2020 and at the same time, this will increase the overall domestic electricity coverage in Sarawak to 99 per cent by 10 per cent by 2025,” he said.

A total of 386 guests attended the breaking of fast with SEB yesterday whereby 30 residents from Rumah Sri Kenangan and 56 children from Rumah Amal Nur Murni received duit raya respectively.

Apart from that, several mosques and surau also received cash donations.
