MIRI: Former Miri mayor Datuk Lawrence Lai Yew Son has rubbished allegations by certain people, that he was incompetent and had joined Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).

“I am still with Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), and has been with the party for the past 30 years, until today, and that I have not joined any other political parties,” Lai said when contacted on Sunday.

He expressed shock on a statement made by SUPP Pujut branch on July 2, that they have ‘shut the door’ for his candidacy for Pujut seat this coming State election.

On the matter (Pujut seat), Lai who is a practising lawyer said, he would leave it to SUPP to decide.

“They claimed that I have joined Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh’s party (PSB), and because of that they cannot consider me as Pujut candidate for SUPP this coming State election. Why you have to smear my name in such a manner?” he asked.

Lai believed that the allegations were possibly made by people from his own party.

“All these while I had just kept to myself in silence, because I don’t want a war in the media over this matter, but this…is too much, people are just twisting the matter around,” he lamented.

On July 2, Pujut SUPP branch, in a local English daily, reportedly insisted that only a member of the branch could contest in Pujut.

The branch alleged that Lai did not understand the needs of Pujut voters, adding that Lai was a Piasau branch member.
