KUCHING: i-CATS University College (i-CATS UC) has collaborated with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) in the Tree Planting Programme in an effort to sustain the environment and also to help beautify Rumah Seri Kenangan.

The corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme was organised by i-CATS UC participated by 45 staff members including its students who took the subject of Global Ecology and Sustainable Development.

A spokesperson from i-CATS UC said that programme was also in collaboration of SEB where 12 of the group’s staff members have joined in at Rumah Seri Kenangan Batu 12, Siburan today (Dec 3).

“The programme was organised to support environmental sustainability in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as well as meet up the elderly people at the home.

“Furthermore, various activities were conducted including the poco-poco dance, karaoke and musicals, decorating the Christmas tree, presenting gifts to the elderly and painting murals,” it said.

SEB Community Wellbeing and Development Senior Manager Douglas Pungga said that SEB is committed to implementing CSR programmes in collaboration with other agencies and institutions.

In his officiating speech, he said the effort to plant more trees was in line with the group’s intention to plant 50,000 trees this year.

In order to achieve the target, SEB has actively cooperate with many parties including the Sarawak Forestry Department (JHS), the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) including i-CATS UC.

“That’s why when i-CATS UC informed that they wanted to do a tree planting programme, we gave full support.

“This is because we understand the function of trees not only to beautify the area at the elderly’s home but also as our oxygen provider.

“Trees are also natural flood mitigation and also one of the important resources in combating the effect of greenhouses and global warming,” he said.

Other than that, he told that this could not be done without the support from all parties, especially the participation of the students from i-CATS UC.

“It is hoped that this activity can make you all aware of the importance of the environment,” he said.
