KUCHING: The appointments of Ketua Kaum (community leader) are based on the choices of the villagers, said Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil.

He stressed that he had never interfered in the appointments nor stop the appointments of community leaders comprising the Tuai Rumah, Ketua Kampung and Kapitan, leaving them to the respective villagers to decide.

“I leave the elections of community leaders to the villagers or votes, then hand over to the District Office to handle the appointments.

“As for the Orang Ulu community, I leave it to their customs, which is on the advice of the Council of Elders, to determine one’s eligibility as village head,” he said in his Facebook post after a meeting with Rh Jemat Apa residents in Sungai Sebindang on Sunday (July 19).

Penguang said there had been issues raised regarding the power of longhouse chiefs, and he urged residents to always communicate with the Beluru District Office or forward any enquiry to him.

“When there is communication, it will be easier to facilitate any allocation and government assistance to residents,” he said.

He also presented a Minor Rural Project (MRP) cheque amounting to RM15,000 to the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) of Rh Jemat and RM5,000 to the Rh Jemat Women’s Bureau.

Besides that, JKKK Rh Sulutan, JKKK Kg Cina Beluru and JKKK Kg Cina Lapok each received RM15,000 while Rh Labo Women’s Bureau received RM5,000.

Santa Maria Sungai Sebindang Church received RM2,000 for the purchase of paint.
