KUCHING: The compound of the iconic white cat statue in Jalan Padungan here has been decorated with lighting and water lilies to welcome the Wesak Day festival this coming Sunday (May 15).

The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) Trust, a private trust independent of Unifor, sponsored the decorations.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was present to officiate at the lighting of the decorations on Monday (May 9), conveyed his appreciation to Unifor Trust.

“In Sarawak, we have racial harmony and we are very proud that we respect each other’s religion and most importantly, we celebrate occasions with each other.”

He added that the white cat statue was also a symbol of celebration for all races and religions.

“Apart from that, Unifor has been helping churches, temples as well as other organisations.”

Also present was Kuching City South Council mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

Wee said the decorations were to showcase the festive seasons and create awareness about each other’s religion and culture.

“Hopefully by August or September, the arch will be decorated with lighting as well.”

Meanwhile, Unifor director Richard Lon said on Wesak Day, a blood donation drive would be held and other programmes would be done in the future, such as for Deepavali and Christmas.

Also present during the ceremony were representatives from Malaysian Buddhist Association Sarawak Branch.
