BAU: The completion of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) post in Serikin is anticipated to boost the tourism industry between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Deputy Minister of Transport (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep emphasised the need for the ICQS post in Serikin to be on par with the Jagoi Babang Border Post.

He noted that the Jagoi Babang Border Post (PLBN) was well-equipped with necessary facilities and technologies, adding that Sarawak should follow suit.

“We must have that kind of planning as they (Indonesia) are well prepared in terms of their borders. We have to catch up,” he said during a press conference after visiting PLBN Jagoi Babang today (Jan 8).

Henry, who is also the Tasik Biru assemblyman, said that the weekly entry count at the border post recorded between 1,000 to 1,500 people.

With this number expected to increase over time, he said there was a need to construct more hotels to accommodate them.

“For those here in Serikin, travelling to Kuching is very convenient; that’s why we want more hotels to be built.

“We will also include these projects under the Greater Bau planning,” said Henry.

The benchmarking visit to PLBN Jagoi Babang was to gain more input for the implementing agencies involved.

Also present during the visit was Kuching Division Resident Norleha Sariff.
