KUCHING:  The number of beds available at the intensive care units (ICUs) in hospitals throughout the state has reached a critical stage.

This was revealed by State Health Director Dr Chin Zin Hing on Monday (May 10). He urged the public to take precautionary measures seriously.

He also reminded the public to avoid mass gatherings, especially during the festive seasons and other social events.

“The situation is critical at government hospitals in Sarawak, these include Sarawak General Hospital, Sarikei Hospital, Sibu Hospital, Bintulu Hospital and Miri Hospital.

“It is crucial that all Sarawakians take precautionary measures like wearing of face masks, keeping physical distancing, taking good care of hygiene and complying with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) enforced,” he said.

Dr Chin stated that those who were symptomatic or had close contacts to Covid-19 positive cases must seek immediate treatment and screening.

“If the public does not cooperate and comply with the SOPs, the Covid-19 cases in the state will continue to increase. The capacity of ICU in hospitals cannot accommodate patients who are in need of intensive treatments and the rate of Covid-19 death will increase,” he said.
