KOTA SAMARAHAN: The position of Penghulu and Ketua Kaum (KK) needs to be established in every residential area to facilitate the affairs of the residents in the area concerned, says Datuk Idris Buang.

The State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Deputy Speaker said with the rapid development, the local population was also increasing.

Using the Desa Ilmu residential area here as an example, Idris said there should be a Penghulu and three KKs of various ethnicities appointed to facilitate government affairs and at the same time, look after the welfare of the residents in the said area.

“Therefore, I have proposed an application to the government that a Penghulu in each housing estate be appointed and there should be at least three KKs in the area.

“The request was proposed last year, however, we have not received a response so far. One day, maybe the application will be considered because it is a need of the people.”

Idris said this when met by the media after officiating the Ketua Masyarakat and Ketua Kaum (KMKK) Empowerment and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Management Procedures course on Thursday (Aug 11).

Commenting further, the Muara Tuang assemblyman added that the government’s administrative system needed support, especially from grassroots leaders.

Hence, he stressed the need for every housing estate, especially in Kota Samarahan, which requires the position of Penghulu and KKs, taking into account that the areas now can be considered modern.

“In Samarahan, there are over 100 housing estates and in the Muara Tuang constituency, including Serian and Siburan, there are as many as 54 villages.

“With the appointment, they will be able to help look after the welfare and safety of the people by channelling information at the government department level and people’s representative.”

Meanwhile, Idris assured that he would continue to propose the application of Penghulu and KK for the benefit of the community in Samarahan.

During the previous handover of basic food aid (BMA), he said, there were some residential areas that did not have representatives from the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

“The Muara Tuang Service Centre took the initiative to help the residents such as the distribution of BMA in Taman Desa Ilmu and we went to the ground ourselves.

“From there onwards, I saw the need to establish JKKK in every housing estate to facilitate the channelling of aid to the community.”
