KUALA LUMPUR:  Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) today pledged support to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the government’s efforts to revive the glory days of Malaysia.

Its president, Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, said the matter was agreed upon in the party’s top leadership meeting on March 12.

“The ruling government has a very heavy responsibility to revive the glory days of Malaysia and Malaysians as a whole.

“We, in Ikatan, have been fighting for the same cause (as Dr Mahathir) since 2012. Therefore, we wish to offer Dr Mahathir a helping hand in discharging this heavy responsibility,” he told a press conference here today.

However, Abdul Kadir said Ikatan’s support for Dr Mahathir did not mean that Ikatan would join forces with Dr Mahathir’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).

“There is no suggestion for Ikatan to join forces with Bersatu, the support we pledged is just to provide an extra pillar of strength to Dr Mahathir in his efforts to lead the country to glory like he once did,” he said.

Meanwhile, when asked on Ikatan’s status in  Gagasan Sejahtera, which also comprises PAS, Abdul Kadir said the announcement on Ikatan’s  support for Dr Mahathir would not affect  Gagasan Sejahtera as every component party in the coalition has the right to pledge its support to any quarters.

“Gagasan Sejahtera is an unregistered coalition. It was formed before the last general election and what was announced today is just to show our solidarity in supporting Dr Mahathir.

“We don’t have to inform PAS about it because when they met with Dr Mahathir and announced their cooperation with Umno, they didn’t bother to notify us,” he added. – Bernama
