SIBU: A 55-year-old man was arrested by the authorities on suspicion of smuggling 1,806 boxes of alcoholic beverages (various beer brands) worth RM447, 401 on Monday.

Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said in a statement yesterday that the items had been confiscated and a 10-ton lorry used by the suspect had been seized.

“Acting on the information received, at about 5pm, an enforcement team from the 10th Battalion GOF Sibu stopped a lorry on the side of the road near Lanang Bridge on suspicion of carrying alcohol.

“After inspecting the lorry, the team found that it was carrying a load of 1,806 boxes of beer and the suspect failed to show proof of tax paid on the goods when arrested,” he said.
According to him, it is an offence under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.

“We have referred the case to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Sibu for further action,” said Ghazali.
