LUNDU: The 11th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) has seized about 416 cartons of cigarette of various brands during an operation dubbed ‘Ops Libas’ on Friday.

Its commanding officer Supt Rosdi Inai said the seizure of the illicit cigarettes worth RM132,640 was conducted at 3.30pm, based on the information gathered by the intelligence.

“A total of 416 cartons of illicit cigarettes, believed to be smuggled, were found inside two cars ― stored in their boots ― at a car park at the Gading Hawker centre here.

“Police also confiscated both vehicles, which has brought the total amount of seizure to RM202,640, which led to an arrest of a 43-year-old man after he admitted to be the owner of one of the cars,” he said in a statement.

Rosdi added that the cigarettes were believed to be smuggled in from a neighbouring country which were meant for the local market.

He said the case was handed over to the Lundu district police headquarters for investigation under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
