KUCHING: There will be an immediate implementation for five Smart Traffic Lights worth RM12mil each at five roundabouts in Kota Samarahan to cater for the traffic congestion in the area.

This was said by the Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian when delivering his speech during the Deepavali/Diwali celebration at Kuching South City Council (MBKS), here yesterday.

According to Sim, the announcement of Smart Traffic Lights was made by the chief minister when attending the Second Anniversary of Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) recently.

“There are five big roundabouts in Kota Samarahan with the three being implemented by the state government whereas the other two will be done by MBKS, according to the chief minister.

“Congratulation also to MBKS for the initiative of these Smart Traffic Lights which become the benchmark for them to solve the traffic congestion,” Sim said.

He added, even though the road is under federal government, the state through JKR, has taken an initiative to use state fund to cater for the implementation of the Smart Traffic Lights.

“We cannot wait any longer for the funding from federal government to solve this issue. The state government has taken a step ahead to solve the issue as we are always independent in assisting our people,” he said.

Sim also lauded MBKS for the success of their I-People application which currently has been installed by 8.000 people.

“This shows the success of MBKS in providing good services to the people whereby this application is for the convenience of the people in getting the services from MBKS,” said Sim.

Also present were MBKS Mayor Datuk James Chan Khay Syn, MBKS Indian staff and members of the Indian community.

The celebration was made livelier with the traditional Indian dance and singing performance by a group from Kuching Indian community.
