KUCHING: Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributions are important for all workers, period.
This fact that is hard to contest and yet ignorance of it still abounds, which prompted Education, Science and Technological Research Assistant Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee to stress the point.
He said this was crucial to provide next of kin some financial support in the event of an untimely demise of the workers concerned.
“Yesterday morning, I and Socso Sibu visited the widow and five children of the late Azinatulazizi Afandi, 34.
“The deceased, who was a Rela member working at Laila Taib College Low-Risk Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC), died while on duty on July 2.
“His wife only works at a diner. This is the role of Socso for employees. The heirs of the deceased (wife and 5 children) have received Death Management Assistance amounting to RM2,000,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday.
Dr Annuar said in addition, they are also eligible to receive a monthly pension payment from Socso worth RM870.
“This pension will be received for life by the widow, and her children up to the age of 21. Although this amount is not substantial, at least there is something for the deceased’s wife and children,” he said.
During his visit the family of Azinatulazizi, the Nangka assemblyman said he would discuss other ways to help the children through the Welfare Department.
He said to ensure better education for the children, they are considering placing them at Pusat Peryatim if the family agrees.
“I feel that the place is suitable for the children because it is where they are well taken care of in terms of education, meals, transportation, and even some pocket money.
“They can go back to the kampung during the weekend because it is not very far, only about 20km, and it seems that the family has agreed to place the eldest child at Peryatim,” Dr Annuar said.
