KUCHING: Traditional and complementary medicine (TCM) in Sarawak plays a pivotal role in healthcare by integrating with modern medicine.

Deputy Premier, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the Ministry of Health has always been aware and supportive of the importance of TCM in Malaysia from the healthcare, economic, social-cultural perspective.

“The Health Ministry aims to integrate traditional and complementary medicine with modern medicine as part of efforts to reduce the country’s disease burden,” he said during the grand opening of Sunway TCM Centre Kuching and Sunway Fertility Centre Kuching at Canaan Square here on Today.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic really taught the people that health is most important.

“At one stage you can’t even fight for a hospital bed if you are in Category 1 or 2 with COVID-19.

“Therefore, I want to congratulate the Sunway Group for stepping forward with the Ministry of Health to tackle the once-in-100-years crisis which is our COVID-19,” he said.

He pointed out that TCM that has been practised for thousands of years amounts to years of wisdom, secret and knowledge passed down which is different from western medicine.

“When the CM Act 2016 is fully enforced, a person intending to practise TCM in any recognised practice area will be required to register with the TCM Council, the highest authority tasked with the responsibility of regulating all activities related to the practice and practitioners of TCM in Malaysia.

“I appreciate that Sunway Group too has taken the initiative to play a part in making safe and quality TCM services accessible to the public in the private sector by integrating them into their healthcare services,” Sim added.

Meanwhile, on the fertility centre set up by Sunway, he said the centre is testimony to Sunway’s commitment and support for the people in Sarawak.

“I am looking forward to two things, namely, health and education which are important to us because it is Sarawak’s aspiration under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), we want to take back our health and education autonomy,” he said.
