KUCHING: The Muslim cemetery (TPI) in Semariang is on average only able to accommodate burials for another five years.

Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust (LAKMNS) chief executive officer
Datuk Abang Wahap Abang Julai said that most of the TPI here has been used up by 70 per cent.

“The cemetery is getting crowded with an average of eight bodies being buried every day and a new site is necessary to increase the area of TPI Semariang which we expect to be full in another five years,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after inaugurating the Semariang TPI Eco-Friendly Gazebo at the Semariang Cemetery, here, yesterday.

He, however, said several measures had been taken to ensure that it was capable of covering the needs of funerals in the future.

“LAKMNS plans to apply for land near the TPI site which has been promised by the Land and Survey Department (JTS).

“We cannot confirm the area for this land application yet because we are still discussing with JTS. God willing, we will manage this matter with JTS in the near future,” he said.

When asked if LAKMNS would also cover up the existing lake near TPI Semariang to facilitate burial needs, he stated such a step would not be taken.

He said this was because LAKMNS is more focused on applying for land with JTS in nearby areas.
