Increase in visitors to National parks noted

National Parks continue to be the most preferred destinations for eco tourists both domestic and foreign because of their diverse biodiversity, beautiful and unique landscape and wildlife varieties.

Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said as of September, 2017, National Parks recorded 462,361 visitor arrivals made up of 102,051 foreigners and 360,310 domestic visitors.

“For the same period i n September, 2016, National parks recorded a total of 422,484 visitors where 94,263 were foreigners and 328,222 domestic visitors. This indicates a positive growth of 8.6% in total visitors’ arrival to National Parks,” he said in his winding- up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting here yesterday.

Abdul Karim also disclosed that national parks which recorded the highest number of visitors are Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park, Matang Wildlife Centre, Niah National Park and Gunung Mulu National Park. Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, he said, is the first National park in Sarawak to be given the recognition under the Malaysia Tourism Quality Assurance (MYTQA) in 2016 under the Nature and Adventure Category.

MYTQA is a recognition established by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia to ensure compliance with certain set of standard and quality for any given product. Such recognition will give tourists more confidence toward that product. The recognition is valid for a period of three years from 2017 to 2020.
