KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) has called on the government to pay attention to the welfare of teachers, especially in terms of allowances.

Its president Macky Joseph pointed out that existing allowances should be increased to help reduce the burden of teachers due to the rising costs of living.

He was commenting on the allowance given to school wardens which was considered too low.

“The allowance needs to be reviewed and it should commensurate with the workload of the wardens in view of the increasing number of students.

“In addition, we also recommend that full housing allowance be provided instead of only half as it is now,” he added.

According to Macky, STU has always put high hopes on the Pakatan Harapan government that it will care about the welfare of teachers and students in Sarawak.

These include the physical conditions of school buildings as well as basic infrastructure facilities such as electricity, clean water as well as road access.

“STU also hopes that the current government will provide high-speed internet access in the interior so that teachers there will be able to teach using technology approaches,” he added.

Meanwhile, the organisation thanked the federal government for providing a huge allocation to education and hoped the Education Ministry would be able to efficiently distribute throughout Malaysia.
