KUCHING: Members of the public are urged to inculcate the 3P- (Precaution, Prevention and Protection) in their surveillance effort since many will either be rushing home in the Raya exodus or have a never-ending stream of guests during the festive season.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue department director Khirudin Drahman reminded the public who would be going back to their hometowns not to rush and practise good housekeeping before leaving their home.

“Before going away, please remove all electrical plugs from the sockets before leaving the house,” he advised.

Stressing on the 3L – “Lupa, Lalai and Leka”, which refers to forgetful, careless and neglect, he said 99 per cent of fire incidences during the festive season were due to human negligence.

From 2015 to 2019, the department recorded 17 longhouse fire cases in 2015, 20 cases in 2016, 26 cases in 2017 and 24 cases last year.

It was reported that 10 out of 93 cases of home fires since January to April this year resulted from the 3L syndrome in the kitchen.

“Be alert and pay attention when handling electrical appliances. Do not overload and avoid illegal wiring.

“It is better to get assistance from those qualified electricians to avoid any unnecessary disaster from happening,” he told the New Sarawak Tribune when contacted yesterday.

Lamenting on the lack of fire safety awareness and lax attitude among the public, Khirudin suggested the need to be mindful by avoiding harmful situations.

“Be alert and put extra precaution, to check whether there is any unusual odour or smoke coming from household appliances. Remember, fires can cause great destruction, from material losses to deaths and injuries.

“Please avoid unsafe conditions which could hinder your safety and that of your loved ones,” he said.
