KUCHING: The government continues to be committed to creating a world-class society by shaping them through the cultivation of reading habits.

The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan said various programmes were implemented throughout the country to achieve the goal of encouraging the community to cultivate reading habits.

He said one of the programmes was ‘Let’s Read Together for 10 Minutes’, which was held yesterday simultaneously in all libraries throughout Malaysia from 11am to 11.10am.

“The atmosphere of leisure through programmes like this can increase knowledge in people. After all, a nation that reads is a successful nation.

“This programme also supports national unity through the involvement of all Malaysians to contribute to the success of the reading programme,” he said in a news report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Junaidi added that the culture of reading should be made a lifestyle among Malaysians.

“The culture of reading is the first step to all progress and makes human beings more viable as well as mature in terms of thinking.

“The progress of the nation and its civilisation can be developed and enhanced if it has high-minded principles due to the culture of reading.

“A society that loves to read is a society that loves knowledge,” he said.
