KUCHING: Sarawak will enjoy a multiplier positive impact to its economic development when Indonesia moves its capital to Borneo island.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the shift of Indonesia’s administrative centre to Kalimantan would bring about rapid development to the island in the future.

“Under the administration of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, infrastructure and socioeconomic development in Sarawak has been moving forward.

“I am confident that with this opportunity, Gabungan Parti Sarawak will be able to lead the state in exploring the new potential it (the shift) will bring,” said the Santubong MP in a Facebook post on Saturday (Feb 19).

In early January, Indonesia’s Parliament passed a Bill to relocate the nation’s capital from Jakarta, which is rapidly sinking. Indonesia also announced that its new capital would be called Nusantara — a Javanese word for archipelago.

The idea of Indonesia building its new capital on Borneo Island was first proposed back in 2019.
