Indonesian gets 14 months for hiding stolen motorcycles

KUCHING: An Indonesian man was sentenced by the Magistrates’ Court to a total of 14 months in prison for voluntarily assisting in disposing of two motorcycles.

Arie Gunawan, 20, from Merendeng, West Kalimantan pleaded guilty before magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali in two separate cases charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code.

The Section provides a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, upon conviction.

For the first case, the accused was sentenced to eight months in prison.

The court has ordered for both sentences to take effect immediately from the day of his arrest on Jan 12, 2023.

Besides that, the court referred him to the Immigration Department after he completes his jail term.

According to the case sheet, the offence was committed in front of a chicken farm in Jalan Batu Kawa around 3.30pm on Dec 22 last year.

The complainant lodged a police report after his motorcycle that he parked at Moyan Square went missing.

As for the second case, the accused was sentenced to six months in prison.

The accused voluntarily assisted in disposing of the motorcycle belonging to the 45-year-old complainant around 11.45am on the same date and place.

Further investigations revealed that the accused failed to provide documents regarding the ownership of the motorcycle.

Both motorcycles were found hidden with dried grass near the chicken farm.

Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted both the cases while the accused was not represented.
