Indonesian gets six months for drug abuse

KUCHING: An Indonesian man was sentenced to six months in jail on Thursday (Nov 4) for drug abuse.

The accused, Fendi, 30, from Pontianak Utara, Indonesia pleaded guilty after the charge was read by an interpreter before Magistrates’ Court judge Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

He was accused of committing the offence last September.

The court also ordered his jail sentence to start from the date he was charged, on Oct 4.

According to the charge, Fendi was accused of taking amphetamine and methamphetamine at a house in Jalan Setia Raja, Taman Stutong Indah, Tabuan Jaya here.

He was found taking the illegal substance at about 12.45pm on Sept 20.

His offence was framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is liable to a jail sentence under Section 15(1) if convicted.

According to the facts of the case, police from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) Kuching District Police conducted a reconnaissance and raided a house at Lorong 12A3, Jalan Setia Raja, Taman Stutong Indah, Tabuan Jaya around 12.48pm on Sept 20.

As a result of the raid, police arrested a man, believed to be involved in drug abuse.

Meanwhile, the initial screening results of urine test found that the suspect was positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Prosecuting officer Insp Mohd Azdmei Ahmad asked the court to impose a heavy sentence on the accused as a lesson.
